I was hit by a car making an illegal left hand turn and I went over the car's hood but thankfully was not badly injured. The insurer was, to be polite, not in the business of paying out settlements to legitimate claims and I hired Bill to work this. He was professional empathetic (as a cyclist himself) and worked this from a number of approaches thoroughly. I highly recommend him based upon my experience and, by the way my wife's as well. Excellent job.

Bill was recommended to me when I got hit by a car while cycling in 2024. He clearly has a wealth of experience with my type of case and he took plenty of time to explain what I could expect from the process and settlement. He kept me well-updated as he negotiated with the third party insurance as well as my health insurance, and in the end I was very surprised and satisfied with the outcome. I would recommend Bill to anyone who finds themselves in my situation. His office is professional, effective, and a pleasure to work with.

Bill was helpful getting the insurance company to respond with the help that was needed. Without his work, I was not even able to get them to respond to me. He was able to guide me with what I needed to do to be successful with my claims.

Bill Shirer is an excellent attorney for injured bicyclists in need of assistance. Bill was a consummate professional at handling my accident which occurred when a SUV failed to yield making a left turn on a flashing yellow light. The accident resulted in severe facial trauma including the loss of multiple teeth and numerous facial fractures requiring several surgeries. His guidance and counsel throughout the process was invaluable. I could not be happier with the outcome of my case due to Bill's diligence and expertise.

Bill was above and beyond in every aspect of representing me. Hopefully I do not get hit by a car again. If I did, I would run straight back to Bill. Thank you Bill for everything that you did for me!

In recent years, the popularity of cycling has soared across the United States. More Americans are choosing bicycles as a mode of transportation, for recreational purposes, and as a means of exercise. However, along with this surge in cycling comes an increased awareness of the importance of bicycle safety. Let’s take a comprehensive look at the state of bicycle safety across different regions of America, exploring key insights and trends that can help cyclists and motorists alike.

Increasing Bicycling Trends

The period from 2000 to 2012 witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of Americans choosing bicycles as their mode of transportation. Commuting to work by bicycle saw a substantial increase from approximately 488,000 to about 786,000 individuals. This surge not only signifies a growing interest in cycling but also reflects the multifaceted purposes people are embracing it for, including commuting, recreation, and exercise.

Rising Safety Concerns

While cycling offers a myriad of health, financial, and environmental benefits, it also comes with inherent risks, especially when accidents involve motor vehicles. As the popularity of cycling continues to rise, there is a corresponding increase in awareness regarding the importance of bicycle safety. Addressing these safety concerns and implementing effective measures to protect cyclists on the road has become imperative.

Disproportionate Injury Risk

When accidents involve a cyclist and a motor vehicle, cyclists face a disproportionate risk of serious injury or fatality compared to motorists. Shockingly, despite constituting only a small fraction of all traffic fatalities and injuries, bicyclists accounted for 2 percent of such incidents in 2012. This underscores the urgent need for measures to enhance bicycle safety and mitigate these risks.

Timing and Location of Fatalities

A significant portion of bicyclist fatalities occurred between 4 p.m. and midnight, with urban areas being predominant locations. These statistics emphasize the critical importance of heightened vigilance during these hours and in such settings. Moreover, they underscore the pressing need for improved infrastructure tailored to safeguard cyclists in urban environments.

Gender Disparity

An alarming gender disparity was observed among those killed while riding bicycles, with 88% being male. This stark contrast in gender distribution highlights the potential existence of gender-specific risk factors or behavioral patterns contributing to accidents. Understanding and addressing these disparities are crucial steps towards developing more targeted and effective bicycle safety initiatives.

Alcohol Involvement

Approximately one in four bicyclists killed in crashes had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher. This statistic underscores the inherent dangers associated with cycling under the influence of alcohol. Efforts aimed at educating cyclists and motorists about the risks of cycling under the influence, coupled with stricter enforcement of laws, are vital in reducing alcohol-related incidents.

Preventable Nature of Crashes

Many bicycle crashes could be prevented if both cyclists and motorists adhered strictly to the rules of the road and exercised caution and awareness. Promoting safe behaviors and fostering a culture of mutual respect between cyclists and motorists are essential steps in preventing accidents and reducing the incidence of injuries and fatalities.

Seasonal Variations

While the summer months typically witness more bicyclist fatalities, there was a significant increase in fatalities observed from January through June in the year 2012 compared to previous years. Understanding these seasonal variations in accident rates can provide valuable insights for designing targeted safety initiatives and interventions tailored to specific times of the year.

Common Trip Purposes

Recreation and exercise emerged as the most common purposes for bicycle trips, closely followed by personal errands. Recognizing the diverse motivations behind cycling can inform the development of safety messaging and infrastructure investments that cater to the needs of different types of cyclists, thereby enhancing overall safety.

Safety Measures

Bicyclists employ various safety measures to reduce their risk of accidents, with a majority opting to use bike headlights or wearing fluorescent/reflective clothing when riding after dark. These efforts underscore the importance of enhancing visibility and reducing accident risks, particularly in low-light conditions, and highlight the proactive approach adopted by cyclists towards their safety.

As cycling continues to gain popularity across America, it is imperative to prioritize bicycle safety and implement effective measures to protect cyclists on the road. By understanding key insights and trends in bicycle safety, we can work together to create safer streets for cyclists and motorists alike.
