I was hit by a car making an illegal left hand turn and I went over the car's hood but thankfully was not badly injured. The insurer was, to be polite, not in the business of paying out settlements to legitimate claims and I hired Bill to work this. He was professional empathetic (as a cyclist himself) and worked this from a number of approaches thoroughly. I highly recommend him based upon my experience and, by the way my wife's as well. Excellent job.

Bill was recommended to me when I got hit by a car while cycling in 2024. He clearly has a wealth of experience with my type of case and he took plenty of time to explain what I could expect from the process and settlement. He kept me well-updated as he negotiated with the third party insurance as well as my health insurance, and in the end I was very surprised and satisfied with the outcome. I would recommend Bill to anyone who finds themselves in my situation. His office is professional, effective, and a pleasure to work with.

Bill was helpful getting the insurance company to respond with the help that was needed. Without his work, I was not even able to get them to respond to me. He was able to guide me with what I needed to do to be successful with my claims.

Bill Shirer is an excellent attorney for injured bicyclists in need of assistance. Bill was a consummate professional at handling my accident which occurred when a SUV failed to yield making a left turn on a flashing yellow light. The accident resulted in severe facial trauma including the loss of multiple teeth and numerous facial fractures requiring several surgeries. His guidance and counsel throughout the process was invaluable. I could not be happier with the outcome of my case due to Bill's diligence and expertise.

Exploring Trends in Bicycle Accidents Nationwide

  1. Increasing Popularity of Cycling: Between 2000 and 2012, the number of Americans commuting by bicycle rose significantly from approximately 488,000 to about 786,000, indicating a burgeoning interest in cycling for diverse purposes.
  2. Growing Safety Concerns: Despite its numerous benefits, cycling poses inherent risks, particularly in accidents involving motor vehicles, prompting escalating safety concerns among cyclists and policymakers.
  3. Disproportionate Risk of Injury: Cyclists face a disproportionately high risk of severe injury or fatality compared to motorists in accidents, constituting 2 percent of all traffic-related fatalities and injuries in 2012.
  4. Temporal and Spatial Fatalities: A substantial portion of bicyclist fatalities, notably 48%, occur between 4 p.m. and midnight, predominantly in urban areas (69%), underscoring the need for heightened vigilance during these times and in these locations.
  5. Gender Disparity: Alarmingly, 88% of bicyclists killed in accidents were male, suggesting potential gender-specific risk factors or behavioral patterns contributing to accident occurrences.
  6. Involvement of Alcohol: Approximately one in four bicyclists killed in crashes had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher, highlighting the dangers of cycling under the influence.
  7. Preventable Nature of Crashes: Many bicycle accidents could be prevented through adherence to road rules and increased caution and awareness by both cyclists and motorists.
  8. Seasonal Fluctuations: While bicyclist fatalities typically peak during summer, 2012 witnessed notable increases in fatalities from January to June compared to preceding years.
  9. Primary Trip Purposes: Recreation (33%) and exercise (28%) were the most common reasons for bicycle trips, followed by personal errands (17%), illustrating the diverse nature of cycling activities.
  10. Adoption of Safety Measures: Bicyclists adopt various safety measures, with a significant majority utilizing bike headlights (44%) or wearing fluorescent/reflective clothing (42%) during nighttime rides, aiming to enhance visibility and minimize accident risks.

Texas Bicycle Accident Insights and Figures

  1. Crash Overview (2007 – 2012): Texas experienced a concerning total of 12,789 bicycle crashes over six years, leading to 12,132 injuries and 297 fatalities. These figures underscore the profound impact of these incidents on the safety and well-being of cyclists across the state.
  2. Age Distribution: Disturbingly, more than a quarter (27%) of cyclists involved in crashes were under the age of 15, while an additional 25% fell between 15 and 24 years old. This highlights the vulnerability of younger riders to accidents on Texas roads.
  3. Gender Disparity: Males comprised a significant majority, accounting for 81% of bicycle crash victims from 2007 to 2012. This striking gender disproportion underscores the need for targeted interventions to address male-specific risk factors contributing to accidents.
  4. Crash Locations: Crashes occurring on higher-speed roads, particularly U.S. and state highways, posed a greater risk of fatalities. While city streets witnessed two-thirds of bicycle crash injuries, highways accounted for 33% of fatalities, emphasizing the elevated risk associated with these road types.
  5. County-specific Data: Analysis revealed several high-risk counties in Texas, including Harris, Travis, Dallas, Bexar, and Tarrant counties, which recorded the highest number of bicycle crashes in the state. Targeting safety outreach and awareness efforts in these counties, alongside existing initiatives, presents an opportunity to mitigate risks and improve safety for cyclists and motorists statewide.
